Thursday night, I got ZERO sleep, I kept wondering if our baby would be with us the next day. I was happy when 6:30am came around on Friday morning. Chris and I went into the doctor at 8:15, Dr. England was running a bit late and didn't get into the room until 9:15, I was so anxious. Finally he made it in, checked me, and sent us over to Labor and Delivery because my water had broken! I was full of so many emotions, I was almost in tears but somehow I kept my cool. At about 9:45, we got to our delivery room and met our nurse, her name was Codi, she was a talker, which was good because it helped me stay calm. I changed into my sweet hospital gown and got into my bed.
-We're ready!-
They started me on Pitocin right away, I finally started feeling my very first contractions. They felt different than I imagined they would. Everyone says that contractions feel just like menstrual cramps, I just thought they kind of felt like tight knots down there. They hooked me up to a monitor that kept track of contractions and of Viv's heart rate, I loved hearing that heart constantly. Codi said that I could have an epidural at anytime, I just needed to push my call button when I was ready.
Chris turned on some Harry Potter to keep me occupied, but by 12:30 I decided that Harry wasn't cutting it and I needed the epidural. When the anesthesiologist, Dr. Rideout, came in, I was totally shocked, he was really young (I always picture doctors to be old for some reason). He was nice and seemed very confident, which is something I really like in a doctor. I was so nervous I was shaking, I was holding Chris' hand SO tight. He walked me through everything that he was doing step by step. The only thing that hurt was when he numbed me. Soon my legs felt tingly and the pain started diminishing. Thanks doc! Codi checked me and I was only dilated to a 3, Dr. Rideout predicted that she wouldn't come until 9pm that night, he said that he had only been wrong twice (I dunno if he was joking though.)
Everyone told me that now was the time to take a nap, I'd need energy later. I tried napping but I was just too excited/nervous to sleep. At 3:30pm I started feeling pain in my left side again, I upped the meds in my epidural but it didn't do anything. We called Dr. Rideout back in, he gave me a double dose of what he originally gave me to start out. He said it would completely numb me until about 7, but I'd be able to feel myself pushing by the time I was ready around 9... WHOA, I was super numb, I couldn't feel ANYTHING, it was really nice haha!

With the epidural, they told me to occasionally flip from my left side to the right side to keep the meds evenly distributed. When I'd flip, it would bump the contraction monitor off a bit. By the time I was really numb, Chris turned on ESPN and I finally fell asleep (that's what sports will do to me haha). I woke up around 6 when Dr. England came into the room, he wanted to put in an internal contraction monitor since mine kept getting bumped off. He sat down, checked me out, and said, "Never mind, you're ready to start pushing!" WHAT?! I was so nervous, this was it!
Dr. England and Codi gave me instructions of what to do, Chris held one leg, my mom held the other, and we started the process right away...I still couldn't feel a thing, seriously I didn't know if I was even pushing or sitting there haha! The pushing really wore me out, I had to grab behind my knees, do a crunch and put my chin to my chest, and hold my breath while pushing for 10 seconds, I had to do that 3 times in a row with each contraction. When I got the hang of it, Dr. England said, "I'll be back in 45 minutes to check up on you" (Codi was helping me push). So, we kept going with the rhythm and pushing for about 10 minutes when Codi said, "Stop pushing or she is going to come now!" She immediately called Dr. England and told him that baby was coming now! I started crying, I was so full of emotions, I couldn't believe that the time was actually here!
Dr. England came into the room, I had a contraction and went through my pushing process. I could tell she was close because of everyones reactions and encouragement. Another contraction came, PUSH HARD everyone was saying. I did 4 big breath pushes...and there she was...the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. I will never forget the look on Chris' face, when she came out, he gasped and had this look on his face that I had never seen, I cry just thinking about it.
They immediately put her onto my chest for skin-to-skin time.
She cried for about 15 seconds, then the most amazing thing happened...she looked up at me and went silent. They were nervous because usually when babies aren't crying it means that they aren't breathing... But she was fine, we were just staring at each other for the first time. She's the most beautiful thing in the world, I couldn't look away.
They took her over to be cleaned, weighed, and measured. Chris got to help, he was the first to hold her (other than me and the doc).
Such a proud daddy
Our first family picture
Vivien Abigail Higley was born on May 25th, 2012 at 6:58 pm, she was 20 inches long and weighed 6 lbs 14 oz. We love her more than anything in the whole entire world.
Quick wrap up: I'm so grateful to have had a very easy labor, basically pain-free and I only had to push for 20 minutes. We are SO blessed to have Vivien in our lives, it was a perfect day.
